QUESTION: IS HOLLYWOOD CLOSED MINDED WITH BLACK FILMS?

Hello everybody….how you doing? I’m feeling ok in spite of my sinus headache. I was on my Facebook page and I came across this from Tyler Perry: “The Problem with an All-Star African-American Cast”.

Mr. Perry says that movies with an all African-American cast are on the verge of becoming extinct. He goes on to say that you can ask any executive at a Hollywood studio why and most will tell you two things: First, they say that the DVD sales have become very soft, so it’s hard for a movie with for an all black cast to break-even. Second, that most movies are now dependent on foreign sales to be successful and that most black movies don’t sell well in foreign markets.

That touches a nerve….a big one. This is the 21st Century right?…..It’s 2012 and still….still people of color are having a hard time with the system of Hollywood. Now as you already know RED TAILS is coming out this Friday. George Lucas…yes the George Lucas is executive producer for this historical drama about the Tuskegee Airman.

You would think that just because he’s a white man, he was able to bring the story to the studios…..wrong.  No studio wanted to touch it. None. So what did Mr. Lucas do? He put up his own money, shot the film, took a big risk by funding the movie and released it himself. Now that’s what I call a leap of faith!

Mr. Perry says that it’s not racism and I totally agree, but I will say this though: Hollywood needs to wake up. Yes, Red Tails has an all black cast and yes it deals with the Tuskegee Airman, but lets look at the big picture: This film is about history. It’s about a group of courageous men who risked their lives during World War II defending our country.

So what do I say about this? Again…Hollywood seriously needs to wake up and start being open to stories that involve not only African-Americans, but all races….Asian, Native American…etc. Stop being so damn close minded! We do have black directors, producers, and big name black actors and actresses, but….

I mean what does it take for those stupid, dumbass studios to open their eyes huh? With that said, I’m planning on seeing Red Tails. Not because of an all black cast, but because it’s a great American story. A great American history story. So…do you think Hollywood is closed mined towards black films or hispanic, or any race of films? Give your opinion.

That’s my last post for this evening….just something to get off my chest. Sinuses are still getting on my nerves. No posts tomorrow, but I will be scoping for more news, first sneak peeks and so on. I will return Thursday.

Good Night and Be Blessed!

  2. As an African / Hispanic American Soldier I am happy that Mr Lucas is taking this big leap of faith, but at the same time I am offended that Hollywood is once again making bald ass excuses for not financially backing a film with an all black cast. Is this what Black, Asian, Latino and Native American soldiers have fought and died for?! It’s okay for them to make the ultimate sacrifice, produce a film but recieve no financing unless there’s a major role for a white person?!!!
    really?!!!

    • I know…it’s frustrating and at the same time it makes me sad. Well it makes me pissed. Like I said, Hollywood needs to wake up…what will it take for that to happen?
